NBAA HERO Database Ready to Assist Those in Need Due to Hurricane Laura

NBAA’s Humanitarian Emergency Response Operator (HERO) Database stands ready for possible hurricane relief needs as Hurricane Laura – currently a dangerous Category 4 storm – aims for the U.S. Gulf Coast.

The HERO Database is a list of business aircraft and industry personnel who are part of disaster-response mobilization efforts. It has previously been activated in response to hurricanes and other natural disasters as well as medical crises. For example, in 2017, members of the HERO Database responded to relief needs in Haiti following a major earthquake.

“Business aircraft are uniquely suited to relief operations, which often occur in small outlying airports or even on beaches or other off-field locations, providing critical supplies and aide in areas where ground transportation might not yet be feasible,” said Doug Carr, NBAA’s vice president of regulatory and international affairs. “NBAA’s HERO Database provides partner relief organizations with one-stop access to business aircraft owners and pilots willing to volunteer their aircraft and time to assist in response efforts.”

NBAA is monitoring Laura’s progress and will activate the HERO Database if needed. Laura was expected to make landfall overnight Wednesday between Galveston, TX and Lake Charles, LA.

Aircraft operators are encouraged to register their ability to support qualified relief missions in advance of Laura’s landfall. Aircraft of all sizes and capabilities are welcome, as relief needs often vary. Registration indicates interest only – operators are under no obligation to accept relief requests if the HERO Database is activated.
